Public transportation in Germany — buses, trams, subways, and regional trains — brings together various local tariffs. To choose the right ticket, compare the costs of your regular routes, check available discounts, and review subscription terms. Prices in this guide are current as of October 13, 2026; always verify the vendor’s tariff before purchasing.
- Regular travel: The Deutschlandticket costs €63 per month in 2026 and covers participating local and regional transport in 2nd class. → Where the ticket is valid
- Cancelling a subscription: With DB, BVG, and hvv, notice must be received no later than the 10th of the month inclusive for the subscription to terminate at the end of the current month. → Subscription and cancellation
- Discounts: With the minimum employer subsidy, a Jobticket costs the employee €44.10. Social fare programs depend on the region: the Berlin-Ticket S is valid only in Berlin AB, while discounted D-Tickets in Hesse and VRR/VRS are valid across all German local transport. → Jobticket and Social tickets
- Occasional trips: Compare your monthly expenditure on single and day tickets with the price of an available subscription. → Single and group tickets
- Unable to show your ticket: If you already held a valid personalized season ticket at the time of inspection, present proof to the transport company within one week of the inspection date. If conditions are met, the penalty fare is reduced to €7. → Inspection and penalty fares
Deutschlandticket: where the ticket is valid
The Deutschlandticket (D-Ticket) is a personalized, non-transferable electronic subscription. It must be presented in an app or on a chip card (if offered by the seller) alongside a valid official photo ID. The Regionalisation Act — § 9 RegG — mandates a digital format and a monthly cancellable subscription; specific prices and procedures are detailed in transport operators’ tariff regulations.
As of January 1, 2026, the standard ticket costs €63 per month. It permits unlimited travel in 2nd class across local and regional transport within participating transport associations (Verkehrsverbünde), state tariffs, and transport companies:
- city buses and trams;
- underground trains (U-Bahn) and suburban commuter trains (S-Bahn);
- regional trains (Regionalbahn — RB) and regional express trains (Regional-Express — RE);
- ferries included in local transport tariffs, such as hvv ferries in Hamburg and BVG ferries in Berlin.
As a rule, the ticket is not valid on long-distance trains (ICE, IC, and EC). Exceptions exist on select sections where long-distance trains are integrated into local fare systems as shown in timetables: check route validity for specific connections. Regular long-distance travel requires a separate ticket. The Deutschlandticket is not valid on FlixTrain and FlixBus, nor on services operated primarily for tourist or historical purposes. See DB terms.
In the DB Navigator app, open “Optionen” and enable “Nur D-Ticket-Verbindungen”. For the filter to work, the transport mode “Verkehrsmittel” must be set to “Alle”. Always read the warning notes in the trip details: DB notes that search results may occasionally include connections that do not accept the D-Ticket, such as certain airport shuttle buses. The filter alone does not replace checking individual connection terms. DB instructions.
Subscription: purchase, payment, and cancellation
The Deutschlandticket is issued as a subscription (Abo), is valid for a calendar month, and renews automatically until cancelled. You can purchase it from DB or any other participating seller. Immediate availability depends on the purchase channel and ticket format.
Accepted payment methods also vary by provider. For example, RMV-TicketShop accepts SEPA direct debit and credit cards; hvv switch additionally accepts PayPal and credit cards. SEPA direct debit is therefore not the sole payment method across all D-Ticket providers.
With DB, BVG, and hvv, cancelling on or before the 10th of the month terminates the subscription at the end of the current month. If the cancellation is submitted on or after the 11th, it takes effect at the end of the following month. Always submit your cancellation to the specific vendor with whom you concluded the contract. For DB, cancellations can be made via the Aboportal or the “Abo kündigen” button beneath the ticket in DB Navigator. Keep confirmation receipts and verify the expiration date.
According to DB regulations, when purchasing for the current month after the 10th, cancellation is only possible effective the end of the following month, requiring payment for both months in full. If you only need a ticket for a short journey, compare this total with local single and day tickets before subscribing.
Bicycles and dogs
The Deutschlandticket does not include nationwide free carriage of bicycles. Local route regulations apply: an additional bicycle ticket may be required, and restrictions regarding times or available space may exist.
For instance, on Deutsche Bahn regional trains in Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, bicycles may be transported free of charge subject to space availability. This exemption does not automatically apply to city buses and trams within those federal states. In BVG/VBB, NRW, and Bavaria, verify the required bicycle ticket and its coverage zone. DB regional bike rules.
There is also no uniform nationwide rule for pets. According to DB regulations, small pets up to the size of a domestic cat travel free of charge in an appropriate carrier that fits under the seat or on the luggage rack. For dogs not transported in this manner, half the regular fare applies. Local transport authorities may apply different rules: in VBB, a D-Ticket holder may take one dog free of charge; VRR permits taking a dog with the DeutschlandTicket Sozial in NRW. When travelling across regions, check the rules for each section.
Jobticket: employer subsidy
A discounted Deutschlandticket for employees (Deutschland-Ticket Jobticket) is available if the employer participates in the program and has concluded a framework agreement with a transport provider. This program does not establish an automatic entitlement to travel cost reimbursement. Contact your human resources department to inquire whether an agreement exists and what subsidy is offered.
If the employer covers at least 25% of the standard price, the transport operator grants an additional 5% discount. Under the 2026 tariff, the calculation is as follows:
| Calculation component | Monthly amount |
|---|---|
| Standard Deutschlandticket | €63.00 |
| Operator discount, 5% | −€3.15 |
| Jobticket price before employer subsidy | €59.85 |
| Minimum employer subsidy, 25% of €63 | −€15.75 |
| Employee cost with minimum employer subsidy | €44.10 |
If the employer contributes a higher subsidy, the employee pays less; employers can also cover the cost entirely. The ordering process depends on the specific framework. For DB Jobtickets, employees receive a company firm code from HR. DB Jobticket terms.
Tax exemption under § 3 Nr. 15 EStG requires that the employer benefit or ticket provision is granted in addition to the regular salary. The tax-free amount reduces the commuter tax allowance (Entfernungspauschale). Exemption from social security contributions under § 1 Abs. 1 Nr. 1 SvEV is likewise tied to an additional, tax-exempt benefit reflected properly in the payroll statement. If part of the existing salary is converted into a ticket, identical tax treatment cannot be assumed automatically: consult your employer’s payroll department for details.
Social tickets: terms depend on the region
Receiving Bürgergeld, social assistance (Sozialhilfe), or benefits under the Asylum Seekers’ Benefits Act (AsylbLG) may qualify you for local discounted fare programs. Program names, validity areas, required documentation, and application procedures differ significantly.
| Program | Monthly price as of Oct 13, 2026 | Validity area | Primary requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Berlin-Ticket S | €27.50 | Berlin AB only | Entitlement to one of the benefits listed by BVG and official proof of eligibility |
| Deutschlandticket with Hessenpass mobil | €44 | Identical to D-Ticket | Residence in Hesse, qualifying social benefit, and Hessenpass mobil |
| DeutschlandTicket Sozial in VRR / Deutschlandticket sozial in VRS | €53 | Identical to D-Ticket | Eligibility certificate issued by the responsible municipality or social agency within the transit authority |
Berlin: ticket and proof of entitlement
The Berlin-Ticket S is available, among others, to recipients of Bürgergeld, Sozialhilfe, AsylbLG benefits, and Wohngeld (housing benefit), subject to program rules. It is a separate local social ticket, not the discontinued Berlin-Abo and not the nationwide Deutschlandticket.
You must write your first and last name onto the ticket. When travelling, carry official photo ID and either the benefit decision notice (Leistungsbescheid) or the agency verification certificate (Leistungsnachweis). The name on the ticket and on the certificate must match.
BVG accepts a copy of the benefit decision with non-essential data redacted, provided the header, document title, full name, and validity period remain visible. For an agency certificate, the original must be presented without redactions. The decision notice may also be displayed in the Jobcenter-App, but screenshots, photos, and standalone PDFs are not accepted. The ticket is sold at BVG ticket machines, apps, and customer service points. Berlin-Ticket S terms and documentation FAQ.
Hesse: ordering via Hessenpass mobil
A discounted D-Ticket is available to Hesse residents receiving Bürgergeld, Wohngeld, Sozialhilfe, or qualifying under RMV rules for asylum seekers. The order requires a Hessenpass mobil. If this certificate has not been sent automatically, it can be requested from the responsible local authority.
In RMV, the ticket is issued on a chip card and delivered by post. Online orders for the following month must be submitted by the 20th; orders placed at customer centers must be submitted by the 10th of the preceding month. Visiting a service point initiates the order process rather than issuing an immediate travel pass on the spot. This discounted product is not sold in the RMVgo app or at ticket vending machines. RMV terms and orders.
VRR and VRS: local verification for nationwide travel
In VRR and VRS, eligible groups include recipients of Bürgergeld, Sozialhilfe, Wohngeld, and AsylbLG benefits. These represent two NRW transport associations; their terms cannot be automatically applied to other municipal discount programs across the state.
In VRR, the certificate of eligibility (Berechtigungsnachweis) or the relevant award notice is obtained from the local authority and submitted to a participating transport provider. During travel, VRR requires photo ID and the eligibility certificate. In VRS, a copy of the eligibility document is attached to the subscription application; continued subscription validity depends on the validity duration of the document and timely submission of renewals. VRR terms and VRS terms.
Alternatives to subscriptions: single and group tickets
There is no universal threshold like “take X trips per week and a subscription is cheaper.” Calculate your travel expenses for a calendar month based on local tariffs and compare them against €63, or against your eligible Jobticket or social fare rate. Consider fare zones, validity duration, and transfer allowances.
Below are specific examples from Berlin and Bavaria, not universal rules for all German cities.
| Ticket | Verified terms | When to compare against other options |
|---|---|---|
| Short trip in Berlin — Kurzstrecke | Up to 3 S-/U-Bahn stations with transfers, or up to 6 bus/tram stops without transfers. Trip interruptions are not permitted. | When your route covers a short number of stops |
| Berlin 4-Fahrten-Karte AB | €12.40 for 4 journeys; each journey valid for up to 120 minutes in one direction. Transfers and stopovers permitted; round trips and return journeys excluded. | When making several individual trips across different days |
| Berlin 24-Stunden-Karte AB | €11.20 for unlimited travel for 24 hours | When planning multiple trips within a 24-hour period |
| Berlin 24-Stunden-Karte Kleingruppe | Up to 5 passengers travelling together for 24 hours; children under 6 travel free | When a group travels together |
| Standard Bayern-Ticket | Up to 5 passengers; up to 3 children aged 6–14 travel free in addition. Weekdays from 09:00 to 03:00 the following day; weekends and designated public holidays from 00:00 to 03:00 next day. | For shared regional journeys within the Bayern-Ticket zone |
Calculation example for an adult in Berlin AB. Four standard single tickets at €4 each cost €16, whereas a 4-Fahrten-Karte costs €12.40. The savings are €3.60, or 22.5%. This calculation applies to the Berlin tariff and does not guarantee identical savings in other cities.
Three standard single tickets cost €12, making the 24-Stunden-Karte at €11.20 cheaper. However, using three journeys from a 4-Fahrten-Karte represents a proportional cost of €9.30 (though the package is purchased for €12.40). The financial advantage of a day ticket depends on the specific comparison and remaining ticket strips. BVG Single Ticket, 4-Fahrten-Karte, 24-Stunden-Karte.
Ticket inspection and increased penalty fares
Before boarding: validity and validation
Ensure your ticket matches your route, travel zone, and travel time. Paper tickets requiring validation must be stamped in the ticket validator (Entwerter) before commencing travel. Tickets already validated do not need to be stamped again: for example, single tickets bought directly from a BVG bus driver are issued pre-validated for immediate travel.
Digital single tickets must be activated prior to boarding in accordance with app guidelines. For the Deutschlandticket, ensure that your subscription is active and that your device can display it during an inspection. BVG instructions.
Travelling without a valid ticket, failure to present it, or failing to validate a paper ticket may incur an increased penalty fare (Erhöhtes Beförderungsentgelt — EBE). § 9 BefBedV provides an exception if purchasing or validating a ticket was impossible for reasons beyond the passenger’s control; this is not a general exemption for inadvertent mistakes.
Penalty amount depends on the mode of transport
| Applicable regulation | Penalty amount (EBE) |
|---|---|
| § 6 EVO — railway transport | Double the standard fare for the travelled distance, at least €60 |
| § 9 BefBedV — trams, trolleybuses, and scheduled buses | Up to €60; the carrier may charge double the standard fare for the trip if higher than €60 |
Consequently, the penalty fare is not necessarily €60 in every situation.
If unable to present a valid personalized ticket
A depleted phone battery or forgotten chip card may result in an EBE notice even if your subscription has been paid for. Retain the receipt issued by the inspector and contact the operating carrier.
- Within one week of the inspection date, present proof that you held a valid ticket at the time of the inspection.
- For a personalized Deutschlandticket, submit the ticket data and official photo ID following the carrier’s specified procedure.
- If the statutory conditions under § 6 Abs. 3 EVO or § 9 Abs. 3 BefBedV are met, the fee is reduced to €7. In bus and tram services, this provision applies to valid personalized passes (persönliche Zeitkarte).
Purchasing a ticket after an inspection does not prove entitlement at the time of inspection. With DB, matters are handled by the fare assessment office (Fahrpreisnacherhebungsstelle), which verifies booking and validity records. DB procedure.
Criminal liability: intent is decisive
§ 265a StGB (obtaining services by deception) prescribes a fine or imprisonment of up to one year for intentionally obtaining transportation with the intent of evading payment. Repeated offenses are not a prerequisite under this statute. At the same time, technical difficulties in presenting a ticket do not inherently constitute an offense: specific circumstances and passenger intent are decisive.
