Job searching in a new country is a marathon, not a sprint. Especially in Germany, where documents are treated with special reverence. Let’s be honest: your resume (Lebenslauf) and cover letter (Anschreiben) are your business card, the first thing a potential employer will see. And our task is to make this card impeccable.
This guide is your roadmap. Let’s walk this path together, step by step.
Section 1: German Resume (Lebenslauf) — Your Main Document
Imagine a German recruiter. In a day, they review dozens, if not hundreds, of resumes. You have about 30 seconds to interest them. Therefore, structure and clarity are everything.
1.1. Golden Rules of the German Lebenslauf
-
“Lückenlos” (Without Gaps): Germans love consistency. Any break in career or studies longer than 2-3 months needs to be explained. This is your trump card, not a weakness! Moving to Germany, intensive language courses, time for adaptation and finding your path – this is full-fledged and important work. Example phrasing:
Length: 1 page is ideal for graduates and specialists with up to 5 years of experience. A maximum of 2 pages for highly experienced professionals. Anything more risks going unread.
-
Format and File Name: PDF only. No .doc or .pages. Name the file professionally:
Lebenslauf_Анна_Коваленко.pdf.
1.2. Structure and Required Sections
Here is the skeleton of an ideal resume.
-
Persönliche Daten (Personal Data)
Required: First and last name, full address in Germany, phone number, email, link to your LinkedIn profile (or Xing, its German equivalent).
Optional: Date and place of birth. According to the General Equal Treatment Act (AGG), this is not mandatory, but it is still often indicated.
Not needed: Marital status, number of children, religious affiliation. -
Berufserfahrung (Work Experience)
The main rule is reverse chronology (the latest job at the top).
Describe results, not processes. Use strong verbs.
Bildungsweg / Ausbildung (Education)
Also in reverse chronological order.
If your diploma has not yet undergone the official recognition procedure (Anerkennung), state it as such.
Besondere Kenntnisse (Special Skills)
Sprachen (Languages): Indicate the level according to the European CEFR scale (A1-C2). Be honest.Deutsch (B2), Englisch (C1), Ukrainisch (Muttersprache).
IT/EDV-Kenntnisse (Computer Skills): List the programs you know and rate your level (e.g., Grundkenntnisse - basic, gut - good, sehr gut - very good, Experte - expert). Führerschein (Driver’s License): If you have one, indicate the category, for example,Klasse B.
1.3. Photo: To be or not to be?
Formally, according to the AGG law, a photo cannot be required. In practice, it is still standard for most fields, except perhaps for very progressive startups. A good photo is your chance to establish first, positive contact.
-
Yes, if: you work in a conservative field (finance, law, sales), if the vacancy involves client contact.
-
No, if: you work in IT or the creative industry, and you want to be evaluated solely on your skills.
If you decide on a photo, it must be professional: neutral background, business attire, a friendly but reserved smile. No selfies or vacation photos!
Table: Do’s & Don’ts for Lebenslauf
| What to Do (Do’s) ✅ | What to Avoid (Don’ts) ❌ |
|---|---|
| Adapt the resume for each specific vacancy. | Send the same resume “like a fan” to 50 vacancies. |
| Use keywords from the job description. | Write in general phrases without specifics and numbers. |
| Explain any career “gaps”. | Leave unexplained periods of unemployment. |
| Proofread the text for errors several times. | Hope that a small typo won’t be noticed. |
| Save in PDF format. | Send in Word or Google Docs format. |
Section 2: Cover Letter (Anschreiben) — Your Voice
If the resume is your “skeleton” of facts, then the cover letter is the “soul.” Here you can show your motivation, explain why you are the right fit for this role, and why you want to work for this specific company.
2.1. Structure from A to Z
Length — strictly one A4 page.
-
“Letterhead” (Briefkopf): Top left — your contact details. Below — the company’s contact details. To the right — city and date.
-
Subject (Betreff): Bold. Clear and to the point.
Bewerbung als Marketing Manager, Kennziffer 12345 -
Salutation (Anrede): Ideally — personal. Spend 10 minutes finding the name of your potential manager or HR manager on the company’s website or LinkedIn.
Sehr geehrte Frau Schmidt,is a hundred times better than the impersonalSehr geehrte Damen und Herren,. -
Introduction (Einleitung): No “with this letter, I am applying…”. Start strong!
Main Body (Hauptteil): Your argumentation.
My experience for YOU: Choose 2-3 of the most relevant achievements from your resume and connect them to the job requirements.
Why YOU: Show that you have researched the company. What do you like about their values, products, projects?
What WE can do together: Formulate the benefit you will bring to the team. -
Conclusion (Schluss):
If the vacancy requests it, state your salary expectations (Gehaltsvorstellung) and possible start date (Eintrittstermin).
Express your readiness for an interview.
Closing:Mit freundlichen Grüßen
Your first and last name (typed)
Important: Do not just repeat your resume! Supplement it, show your personality and motivation.
Table: Do’s & Don’ts for Anschreiben
| What to Do (Do’s) ✅ | What to Avoid (Don’ts) ❌ |
|---|---|
| Write a unique letter for each vacancy. | Use the same template for all. |
| Address a specific contact person. | Write an impersonal “Dear Sir or Madam.” |
| Show your motivation and knowledge of the company. | Repeat dry facts from the resume. |
| Be confident but polite. | Write in a pleading or, conversely, arrogant tone. |
| End the letter with a call to action (an interview). | End the letter passively and uncertainly. |
Section 3: Final Checklist Before Sending
You are almost there! Before you hit the “Send” button, go through this list:
-
[ ] Both documents (Lebenslauf and Anschreiben) have been proofread for errors by a native speaker or at least three different online services (e.g., Duden Mentor).
-
[ ] All documents are saved in PDF format.
-
[ ] File names are correct (
[ ] You are sending the exact versions of the documents that are tailored to this specific vacancy.
-
[ ] The correct recipient and company name are indicated in the email.
The job search process can be tiring and anxiety-inducing, especially in a new country. Remember: every application, even if it doesn’t lead to an interview, is an experience. Analyze, improve your documents, and don’t give up.
Your ideal job in Germany awaits you. All that’s left is to present yourself correctly! Good luck!
