Residence permit in Germany under §24 extended until 2027: what to do next?

News contents

Temporary protection for Ukrainians in the EU has been extended until 4 March 2027. Who is affected by the automatic extension, how to confirm your status without a new eAT card, and why you need to start preparing for a change of residence permit today.

The European Union and the German government have officially confirmed the extension of temporary protection for Ukrainians until 4 March 2027. This decision gives the necessary time to adapt, but also reminds us: the status under §24 is not unlimited.

We look at who is covered by the automatic extension, how to prove lawful residence without replacing the plastic card, and why you should start thinking about a status change (Spurwechsel) today.

Automatic extension: who does not need to go to the foreigners authority

The good news is that for most Ukrainians, the extension happens automatically on the basis of a regulation from the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI). There is no need to make an appointment at the Ausländerbehörde (foreigners authority) or request a new appointment.

However, the rules do not apply to everyone. It depends on your citizenship and your property situation at the time the full-scale war began.

Category of personsRight to automatic extensionExplanation
Citizens of UkraineYesThose whose residence permit under § 24 was valid on 1 February 2026.
Family membersYesSpouses and minor children of Ukrainian citizens with temporary protection status.
Persons with protection in UkraineYesThose who had international or national protection in Ukraine before 24 February 2022.
Holders of permanent residence permitsYesThird-country nationals who had permanent residence in Ukraine.
Students and labour migrants (third countries)NoPeople who were in Ukraine temporarily and have the opportunity to return to their home country. They require an individual assessment.

The plastic card (eAT) has expired. What to do?

The automatic extension means that your status is legal even if the date on the plastic eAT card (Elektronischer Aufenthaltstitel) has already passed. New cards will not be issued.

In practice, this can cause misunderstandings. Employees at banks, HR departments or new staff at the Jobcenter are not always familiar with the details of immigration law.

How to act in a disputed situation:

    1. Present your currently valid (even if regionally expired) eAT.
    2. Show the official explanation. Print or save on your phone a link to the decree on the Germany4Ukraine website or the Bundesamh of Interior website.
    3. Refer to the relevant legal act: Ukraine-Aufenthaltserlaubnis-Fortgeltungsverordnung (Regulation on the continuation of residence permits for Ukrainians).
    4. As a last resort, ask your Ausländerbehörde for written confirmation (Fiktionsbescheinigung or a certificate).
    Tip

All social rights — benefits (Bürgergeld, Kindergeld), health insurance and access to the labour market — remain fully preserved for the extension period.

Analysis: what will happen after 4 March 2027?

Brussels and Berlin are already openly saying that yet another, fourth extension of the Temporary Protection Directive — after spring 2027 — is highly unlikely.

According to recent reports from expert think tanks (such as SVR and BICC), Germany wants to avoid a chaotic rush of asylum applications in 2027. The government is focusing on labour-market integration. The economy has an absolute shortage of workers — around 391,000 vacancies are currently open for skilled workers.

What does this mean for you? The temporary protection programme is gradually turning into a labour-attraction policy. The state is ready to give long-term residence permits to those who integrate: people who learn the language, work or complete training in an in-demand occupation. Sitting and waiting for 2027 is a bad strategy. You need to start Spurwechsel (the status change) right now.

Change of status options: how to stay in Germany legally

Switching from refugee status to national residence status has become much easier. For most work and study sections, you no longer need to leave Germany or to apply for a D-visa at a consulate.

    1. Work residence permit (Blue Card, § 18a, § 18b, § 18g)

This is the most reliable and promising route. It allows you to later apply for a permanent residence permit and for German citizenship.

    • EU Blue Card: Requires a higher education degree and a contract with a certain salary level (from 45,300 € per year in 2026; from 35,100 € in shortage occupations).
    • Qualified professional: There is no minimum salary limit, but the contract must correspond to your recognised qualifications.
    • Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card): A one-year visa for job search, including reduced? the right to work up to 20 hours a week.

    2. Study and vocational education (§ 16a, § 16b)

    • Study at university (§ 16b): A good option for young people. One of the barriers at the financial presence can be hard: you need a blocked account of around 12,000 € per year.
    • Ausbildung (§ 16a): Dual study (part-time work + VET). If you start a training position, you receive immediately, the employee immediately offers a remuneration, you learn a professional focus and have the right to remain in the occupation.

    3. Self-employment (§ 21)

This is suitable for sole proprietors and freelancers. For this section, you need to prove to authorities in Germany that your business is sufficient, that you have customers, and that you can meet you another enough self-employment income.

Step-by-step plan: what to do right now

Time until the 2027 will fly by, and the German bureaucratic machine runs fast.

    1. Work on your documents. Make sure your foreign passport is valid. Put together all diplomas, certificates and work references.
    2. Start the recognition process. Recognises that your foreign higher education is a precondition for the work Visa?? Team skill. The recognition procedure (Anerkennung) may take between 3 and 12 months. Without a recognised diploma, moving to a work section for a skilled profession is not possible.
    3. Use government support. The govern with a home officer. Give to a federal travel or the Agentur der Arbeit a paying for a educational training. The state can pay for your re-training (Weiterbildung) if it helps you find a job.
    4. Learn German. For comfortable integration and a change of statuses, level B1/B2 is the critical minimum in Germany.

    Conclusion

The extension of §14 status in Germany until 2027 is not a reason to relax, but a gift of time for preparation. Germany wants to be clear: the future lies here for everyone with the willingness to integrate into the economy. Do not be afraid of bureaucratic hurdles — use free counselling centres (AWO, Caritas, Amos? Krise), have your qualification certificates checked and keep looking for work. If you build this in the „begin to think“ as a person today, you will feel in 2027 self-confident and secured.
