Your German Residence Permit Extended Automatically: What You Need to Know

In November 2024, the German government made a decision that can be called revolutionary for over a million Ukrainians. Temporary protection (§24) has been extended until March 4, 2026, and most importantly – this will happen automatically, without the need for a personal visit to the foreigners’ authority (Ausländerbehörde).

This means the end of an era of months-long waiting for appointments, nervous queues, and the fear of being left with expired documents. But what does “automatic extension” mean in practice? Let’s break down the most important details.

The Main Principle: “What Do I Need to Do?” — “Nothing!”

The core idea of the new regulation is brilliant in its simplicity: all residence permits under §24 that expire on March 4, 2025, are considered valid until March 4, 2026. You do not need to apply, you do not need to get an appointment, you do not need to visit the authority.

Your existing plastic card (eAT) or sticker in your passport continues to be your legal document, even if it shows an old date.

How to Prove Your Status? A Practical Guide

Of course, a logical question arises: how do you explain to an employer, landlord, or border guard that your “expired” card is actually valid?

SituationWhat You Will Need
Within Germany (Jobcenter, employer, bank, landlord)Your current document (residence permit card) + a link or printout of the official regulation (Ukraine-Aufenthalts-Erlaubnis-Fortgeltungsverordnung).
Traveling outside GermanyYour passport + residence permit card + a printout of the official regulation. This is critically important!

When crossing the border, be prepared for the possibility that a border guard or airline employee may not be aware of the new regulations. Calmly show the printout of the document and explain that a decision has been made in Germany for an automatic extension. This is absolutely legal.

Analysis: Why Did Germany Abandon Bureaucracy and What’s Next?

  1. Preventing Collapse. Migration services across the country simply could not handle the load of over a million applications. Automation is the only way to avoid a complete paralysis of the system.

  2. Saving Resources. This decision saves millions of euros of public money and countless human hours for both officials and Ukrainians themselves.

  3. Looking to the Future. It’s important to understand that this is likely not the last such step. The EU Council has already recommended extending temporary protection until March 2027. It is probable that in the autumn of 2025, Germany will use the same scheme and extend the status automatically again. So, it’s worth getting used to this convenient system.

Conclusion: Time is the Most Valuable Resource

The automatic extension of residence permits is not just a technical convenience. It is a huge gift in the form of saved time, nerves, and energy. Now, these resources can and should be directed towards what truly matters: in-depth German language learning, finding better employment, education for children, and calmly planning your life – whether in Germany or, in the future, in a free Ukraine.
